Erik Satie devised a style of music he referred to as ‘furniture’ music, music to be played as a background to some other event or activity.

His first attempts to perform his furniture music were an unqualified failure. When guests at a gallery opening heard him begin to play they politely stopped chatting to listen. Long before music as a backdrop became commonplace, Satie understood how it could create ambience and mood – while reading a book, for example.
